A woman who works at the same company as my boyfriend is a huge cat rescue advocate. She sets traps, capturing mostly adult cats has them spayed or neutered then releases them to their feral lifestyle. With the kittens she captures she tries to find homes.
Sometimes people with causes are well meaning but also can be fanatical to a point they do not see the needs of the humans she imposes upon.
She has been hounding JP for months about these feral kittens. She overheard that we were looking for a friend for Burroughs. She called us and told us that she had a cat for us to adopt. JP likes gray cats like the chartreuse or russian blue varieties. She had one so he said ok.
He goes to work and there are TWO feral kittens in the cage. She says she needs the cage by the next morning and she cant take the kits with her after work because she has to travel a few hours to do something
So we have these poor kitties in a room in our house with a barrier across the doorway so they can't get out but they can still hear our sounds and smell our smells..
These kittens are completely defensive and freaked out. they growl and spit / hiss every time we do anything. We have tried to make them comfortable with little boxes and old towels for bedding. we give them wet food and dry food along with water. they definitely know how to use a cat-box because it is full of tiny poops!
They yowl all night struggling to climb to higher ground or to find some way to escape. Whenever we are not there with them, they are trying to escape, clawing at the walls, or whatever is there, trying to find a good hiding place or freedom. they freak out if the other walks away or hides somewhere else.
I feel horrible about it. they are completely unapproachable. the bad thing is that there are two of them. one feral cat would be okay as it would depend on us and it would be more likely to be socialized in that case, but two reinforce their wildness.
Initially, we discussed getting a kitty from local litters advertised in the paper! That way they would be loving and playful, purring and petable. these ferals do not know how to play. They are used to extreme survival mode, and being captured in traps...
I like cats however these keep us up all night yowling and knocking things over trying to escape.
A little bit more catnip!
